My comment: I was thrilled to stumble across your homepage. I recently researched my family's Genealogy on my father's side - also the Heffernans. There seems to be several similarities regarding our ancestors living in Ireland in the early to mid 1800's (names and counties). I am in my office...but will try to get to my home computer this evening to print the family tree. My ancestors immigrated to Pennsylvania from Ireland. I am quite curious to see if we are related. Will keep you posted. Best Regards Michael Heffernan Staten Island, NY

My comment: I found this site simply by accident. My grandfather is Joseph James Hefferna of Tipperary. He died sometime,oh, maybe 1940's? in Brooklyn, NY I don't have a very early picture of him, so I don't know if it's indeed him. He came to N.Y as a young boy and married Mary Williams of Long Island, had 13 children. My mother Edna Margaret Heffernan was his daughter--she had 7 children--most of of were either born in Brooklyn, Queens, or Long Island. I actually work now for a Heffernan--merely by fate of coincidence--Ellen Heffernan. I don't know if your great uncle is my grandfather, but I was pleased to see this site.

Name: Susan McGuirk

Am I Irish?: Irish American

My comment: I am researching my great, great aunt. She married a whaleman in Sag Harbor, NY in 1847 named Michael Heffernan from Cashel, also. He went to CA for the Gold Rush in 1849 with his brother, William, who also worked on whale ships. They went because the industry ended when oil was discovered. Michael went on to Ohio, where he tried to contact his wife, Catherine McGuirk, in NYC, using "Missing Friends" in the Boston Pilot, several times, to no avail. Ellen Heffernan, the sister of the two brothers, stayed behind with Catherine. Eventually she married a man named Burke and moved to Pennsylvania. She, too, used "Missing Friends" to find her brothers, including one more named Eneas. I noticed some of your census listings reflect some of the above movements. Do you know if your Cashel branch is related to mine? There also seem to be a group of Cashel Heffernans that found their way to Wisconson in 1860s, but can't find a connection to mine.
